Suka museum dan benda-benda peninggalan kerajaan masa lalu? Kalo lagi traveling ke Kamboja, mampirlah National Museum of Cambodia (Museum Nasional) di ibukota negara ini, Phnom Penh. Destinasi ini adalah museum terbesar di Kamboja. Di dalamnya menyimpan lebih dari 14 ribu koleksi dari Kerajaan Khmer berupa patung, keramik, perunggu, dan benda-benda etnografi lainnya.

Selama era rezim Khmer Merah pada tahun 1975 sampai 1979, museum ini terbengkalai, atapnya rusak dan jadi sarang kelelawar. Banyak koleksi museum yang rusak, hilang, dan dicuri. Sebagian besar pegawainya pun tewas selama rezim Khmer Merah.

Located just north of the Royal Palace, The National Museum is Cambodia’s largest museum of cultural history and is the country’s leading historical and archaeological museum. The museum is housed in a graceful terracotta structure of traditional design, with an inviting courtyard garden. It’s is home of the world’s largest collections of Khmer art, including sculptural, ceramics, bronzes, and ethnographic objects.

During Khmer Rouge regime, the museum, along with the rest of Phnom Penh, was evacuated and abandoned. The museum closed between 1975 and 1979 and was found in disrepair, its roof rotten and home to a vast colony of bats, the garden overgrown, and the collection in disarray, many objects damaged or stolen. Many of the museum’s employees had lost their lives during the Khmer Rouge regime.

Sebagai kebanggaan dan identitas bagi bangsa Kamboja, museum ini juga melayani fungsi keagamaan, terutama sebagai pusat pembelajaran koleksi penting Budha dan Hindu, meskipun museum ini tidak diperuntukkan sebagai tempat ibadah. Sejumlah pameran yang didukung oleh UNESCO kerap digelar di museum ini.

Untuk menyusuri bagian dalam museum, travelers hanya perlu mengikuti jalur atau rute mulai dari pintu masuk, ruang pameran, sampai taman di dalam museum dengan berbagai tanaman dan ikan hias di dalam kolam.

Museum ini buka setiap hari dari jam 8 pagi sampai 5 sore. Harga tiket masuk 5 USD untuk wisatawan asing -lengkap dengan audio tour guide yang tersedia dalam bahasa Khmer, Inggris, Perancis, dan Jepang.. Harga untuk warga Kamboja 500 Riel. Foto dan video tidak diperbolehkan di dalam museum, tapi bisa dilakukan di area luar (taman dalam dan depan). Tersedia penjualan souvenir museum seperti buku, kartu pos, dan patung replika.

The Museum was quickly tidied up and reopened to the public on April 13, 1979. The museum also contains displays of pottery and bronzes dating from the pre-Angkorian periods of Funan and Chenla (4th to 9th centuries), the Indravarman period (9th and 10th centuries) and the classical Angkorian period (10th to 14th centuries), as well as more recent works, such as a beautiful wooden royal barge.

Photography is only allowed in the court area. Before visiting the Royal Palace, it’s better for you to come here because it’s a relatively small site and you still have enough energy to go to the Palace which requires much more energy and time. Guided tours can be arranged for individuals or groups at the museum entrance. Tours are available in Khmer, English, French and Japanese.
